Uppsala City Hall

Henning Larsen Architects designed the new Uppsala City Hall, where just over 1,600 employees of Uppsala Municipality work. It also has a café and restaurant. It is approximately 27,000 sq. m. in total, of which the new addition is 14,000 sq. m. The new section was designed to match the original construction from the 1960s.

For this project, function and architecture went hand-in-hand and there were ambitious sustainability targets to have the building certified (both the older and newer section) in accordance with BREEAM Excellent.

Fasadglas manufactured and installed the glass facades on the new section of the building. They are aluminium clad wooden elements that were prefabricated at our production facility in Hultsfred. The glass slits and main entrance are site-built timber and aluminium systems. What is unique about this project is that the frame of the facade elements are insulated prefab modules with a wooden frame, clad with specially developed aluminium profiles that give the facade its characteristic appearance.

The biggest challenges with this project involved logistics and assembly. Because the prefabricated facade elements were assembled on site (more or less directly after they were unloaded from the truck), manufacturing and deliveries were key success factors.
